Grand Junction is the proud home of two outstanding
skatepark facilities - Westlake Skatepark and Eagle Rim Skatepark! Safety equipment is recommended for all users, including
knee, elbow and wrist guards. Helmets are required at all
times while riding. Trick bikes and rollerblades may also
ridden, besides skateboards.
Westlake
Skatepark has been in existence since 1997, and is
located off of First Street and Orchard Avenue, behind City
Market. This park has been extensively used by thousands of
skateboarders, bikers, and in-line skaters. Additionally,
it has been featured in Thrasher,
American City and County, Colorado Parks and Recreation and
Colorado Municipalities magazines, among others, and
The Denver Post. The park is 18,000 square feet of fenced
concrete bowls andstreet
skate area, and cost $223,000 when constructed. Funding came
from the City Parks & Recreation budget, the Jaycees and
Mesa County Lottery funds, the Lions Club, the El Pomar Foundation,
and private business donations. The park is complete with
one street skate area, with miscellaneous objects: rails,
walls, ramps, and boxes. There are also three large concrete
bowls: one is rectangular shaped, approximately 7 feet
deep; one is free form "L" shape nearly 90
feet long and averaging about 7 feet deep; and the third
is a high performance, 10 feet deep, one foot of vertical
space at the top and pipe railing around the edge for added
excitement and challenges.
| To access the Westlake
Skatepark, take North Avenue to 1st Street.
Turn north onto 1st Street progressing to Orchard Avenue.
West Middle School will be on the southwest corner, and
City Market on the northwest corner. Turn left onto Orchard
Avenue, which dead-ends into the skatepark parking lot.
Or, if accessing the park from Patterson Road, take First
Street (also marked as 26 Road at Patterson) south to
the traffic-lighted intersection at Orchard Avenue. Turn
right onto Orchard Avenue. |
In July 2000, Eagle
Rim Skatepark was
added. This skatepark is located on the bluff of the Colorado
River, adjacent to Orchard Mesa Middle School off 27 ¼
Road, and is approximately 9,000 square feet and is equipped
with concrete ramps, fun boxes, and rails, and the trail designed
for inline skating. It is the "tamer" and less technical
of the two parks, and is excellent for all ages and skill.
The adjacent skate track also connects users
to the Colorado River Front Trail System, allowing a continuous
link to downtown Grand Junction and the rest of the trail
system. Now that the park is complete, it offers exceptional
recreation opportunities for the entire family! A park shelter
with restrooms and water are adjacent to the skating area
and offers a shady reprieve for the active fun seeker or other
family members!

Eagle Rim Skatepark, take 5th Street south out of Grand
Junction, crossing the Colorado River and traveling onto
Orchard Mesa. Proceed south to Unaweep Avenue, (stoplight)

1.25 miles, on your left (south side of the road). Turn
south, toward the river, onto 271/4 Road, which empties
into the Eagle Rim Park parking lot. |
